Brief
Blackon was a purpose-driven clothing brand I created to celebrate the spirit of the underdog and to remind people that they are powerful beyond measure. Rooted in African heritage and the wisdom of cultural icons like Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, and Dr. Sebi, the brand fused empowerment, education, and style. Its mission was to uplift Black voices, honor ancestral legacy—from Kemet (ancient Egypt) to modern Black excellence—and inspire perseverance through fashion.
What We Did
I developed the brand entirely from concept to execution—creating the visual identity, apparel designs, and brand messaging that carried its mission. I also led marketing and social-media campaigns, content creation, and collaborations that helped the brand reach more than one million people and serve over 1,000 customers. The brand gained visibility through notable supporters including Grammy-winning producer Dubba AA, actress Tracey Bonner (Black Lightning), and Latoya Collins, wife of a Memphis Grizzlies assistant coach Penny Collins. Blackon also became a staple within Tennessee State University, where I designed the first official hockey jerseys—five years before TSU officially launched its historic HBCU hockey team.
Result
Blackon grew into a cultural statement that united fashion, history, and empowerment. Through its message of resilience and pride, the brand became a recognizable name across HBCUs and within the broader Black community—proving that clothing can do more than make a statement; it can spark a movement.
